Student artists recognized at 2013 Na Mele O Maui

Art titled “Visions of the Past” by Mitchel Dutro, senior, Kamehameha Schools Maui, took Best of Show and First Place in Division II, Two-Dimensional Art for 11th- and 12th-graders in the 2013 Na Mele O Maui Student Art Competition on Friday.

This year’s theme, “Na Wahi Pana Aloha Hawai’i, Beloved Places of Hawai’i,” allowed students a broad theme to create art about their favorite places in Hawaii.

“Dutro’s entry has a warm, old-style feel,” said judge Steve Brinkman, of Steve Brinkman Photography. “There’s good directional light which allowed the artist to achieve emotion and strong sense of place.”

Teachers submitted artwork for students in grades 912. Judging took place at the Department of Education’s Maui District Office in Wailuku. This year’s judges were Brinkman and Todd Campbell.

“Lilia Lorenzo’s piece titled ‘Kalalau’ was quite impressive in its simplicity,” said Campbell, a woodcarver.

“I saw Kalalau right away,” said Brinkman. Lorenzo is a junior from Kamehameha Schools Maui.

Sharmaine Gutierrez of Lahainaluna High School took the top prize in Division 1 Two-Dimensional Art for 9th- and 10th-graders.

“This was a strong piece. I appreciated Sharmaine’s perspective of Lahaina and thought she showed great technique,” said Campbell.
