Youth orchestra to present Winter Concert

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra will present its annual Winter Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, in the auditorium at Baldwin High School in Wailuku.

The free concert will feature student musicians ages 9-17 on string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, as well as guest artists Valerie Lum, Tami Saito, Sue Nakama, Stephen Rodrigues, Cody Sarmiento, Julius Galanto and Richard Tadaki.

The program will also include a performance by the MYPO Brass Ensemble.

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Lance H. Jo, is made up of advanced student musicians. This year’s Winter Concert will include the following selections: “Fidelio Overture, Opus 72” by Beethoven; “Ispirato da Vivaldi” by Tim Shackelton; “Italian Girl in Algiers” by Rossini; “Nutcracker Ballet Suite” by Tschaikowsky; “What’s Up at the Symphony?” arranged by Jerry Brubaker; and “Sleigh Ride” and “A Christmas Festival,” both composed by Leroy Anderson.
