Cultural event includes an award presentation

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will welcome the Year of the Horse at its annual Shinnen Enkai (New Year) dinner Jan. 19 in the Elleair Rainbow Room at the Maui Beach Hotel. The Shinnen Enkai will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the traditional otoso (sake welcome), with a no-host cocktail hour to follow. Dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Cost for the buffet dinner is $50 adults, $20 children (6-11 years old), free for children ages 5 and under.

Tickets are available through the Maui Box Shop and Credit Associates in Wailuku, and Sanrio at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center until Tuesday. Organizers note that tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door.

The event will highlight the past year’s events and programs sponsored by JCS Maui and will install newly elected officers and board members, including the Rev. Shinkai Murakami as the new president. There will also be a presentation of the Nihon Bunka Award to Hiroko Deleon, a former Japanese language instructor of University of Hawaii Maui College, and a kimono fashion show.
