Hydroponics topic of talk
Paul Singleton will give a presentation titled “An Anatomy of a Commercial Hydroponic Production System” at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Kahului on Monday at Cafe O’Lei at the Dunes at Maui Lani.
Singleton, an agronomist, social scientist and president of Pacific Produce Inc., doing business as Waipoli Hydroponic Greens, will present a brief overview of the basic principles of hydroponic agriculture; explain how these systems support higher yield than soil-grown crops; and provide highlights of the management of the company’s system.
Singleton is a professor with the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and co-owner of Pacific Produce with partner Geoff Haines. They produce fancy lettuces in Kula and market them to upscale restaurants and retail outlets in Maui and Oahu.
The public is invited to the meeting. The cost for lunch is $20 or a $5 program fee. Information about speakers and club service projects can be found at www.kahuluirotary.org. For more information, call club President Paul Janes-Brown at 572-8000.
