Grants

Foundations and entities who contributed recently to Maui County community nonprofits and others are as follows:

Matson has presented a check for $9,500 to Maui United Way’s 2013-14 campaign, adding corporate support to the $12,000 in donations made by its Maui employees earlier this year.

“Matson’s Maui operations team has demonstrated an extraordinary increase in support for the needs of Maui’s health and human service charities, thanks to the leadership of employees Donald Dudoit, Kam Chun and Buzz Fernandez,” said Laksmi Abraham, president/CPO of Maui United Way. “MUW is overwhelmingly grateful for the caring support Matson’s employees offer, as well as the company’s contribution, which allows us to provide much needed support to those in need here on Maui.”

Matson Terminal Operations Manager Kam Chun added, “Matson’s involvement with the MUW underscores our commitment to the communities that we serve. Speaking on behalf of my colleagues, it’s an honor and privilege to touch so many lives in such a positive way.”

Panda Express donated $1,000 to Wailuku Elementary School’s 4th-grade class on Feb. 26.

The class received the donation as the winner of Panda’s Back-to-School Fundraising Challenge, which enabled nonprofit organizations in Hawaii to raise funds for their group through hosted events at Panda Express locations between September and January.

Vice Principal Tracy Lui and teacher Debra Ho accepted the prize along with the 4th-grade students of Wailuku Elementary. The class raised $780, and the company added an additional $1,000 for a total donation of $1,780. The donation will allow the class to attend Ulalena, which depicts Maui’s rich cultural history through music and dance.

Haleakala Waldorf School has been awarded a grant of $30,000 from McInerny Foundation (Bank of Hawaii, trustee) toward its tuition-assistance program for the 2014-15 academic school year. Students benefiting from this award must qualify because of financial need.
