Free Comic Book Day at two Maui libraries

The Kihei and Lahaina public libraries will offer readers free comic books Saturday in celebration of the 13th Free Comic Book Day.

Library patrons showing valid Hawaii State Public Library System cards will receive a special free comic book, while supplies last.

Free Comic Book Day ( is celebrated worldwide on the first Saturday in May, and participating libraries and comic book shops have given away millions of free comic books over the past 12 years. The Kihei and Lahaina libraries will offer a variety of comic books for all ages. Readers can choose from among popular series including “Hello Kitty Surprise,” “Transformers vs. G.I Joe,” “The New 52 Futures End Special Edition,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Teen Titans Go #1 Special Edition.” Comic book selections will vary by library.

A special Free Comic Book Day program will also be offered at Kihei Public Library from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday with James Silvani, a Kihei-based comic book artist and author.

Silvani is known for his art in titles including “Disney’s Darkwing Duck,” “The Muppets,” “Ducktales,” Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Penguins of Madagascar,” Warner Brothers’ “Animaniacs” and “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Silvani also illustrates Muppet storybooks and creates exclusive Disney and Star Wars fine art for Acme Archives.

He is the author of “Draw-A-Saurus: Everything you Need to Know to Draw your Favorite Dinosaurs.”

This program is suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
