School and Rotary club raise money for typhoon relief

As soon as the news was heard of the typhoon that hit the Philippines, members of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise jumped into action to collect funds for relief efforts.

Five meetings of “Happy Dollars” were collected for the funding efforts. Member “Chef” Fely Livaudais offered a Filipino BBQ/pool party dinner at her home, which featured a three-course Filipino dinner and was attended by almost 50 members and guests.

President-elect Joanne Doell approached Montessori School of Maui to assist in fundraising for the endeavor.

At the end of a six-week campaign, $5,080 was collected – $1,100 from the school and the remainder from the club’s efforts.

ShelterBox International was selected as the vehicle for support. The funds were delivered to that group this spring. Distributions continue across the islands of Panay, Bantayan, Cebu and Leyte, as well as Tacloban in Leyte, the hardest hit area.
