Two speakers to appear at free gardening event

Terry Nutt will talk about “Plants That Make Scents” during a free presentation hosted by the Maui Association of Landscape Professionals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Community Services Building on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus. Nutt will describe both common and unusual plants that can add an olfactory dimension to gardens.

Nutt’s presentation will be followed by MALP’s featured speaker at 7 p.m. Robin Shimabuku will give a presentation titled “Vegetable Gardening in Maui.”

Shimabuku will discuss placing plants into family groups so gardeners can understand the best cultural practices for successful crops.

He will also discuss pest and disease controls, incorporating his experiences from his work on Maui and in other countries.

Attendees are encouraged to come early and bring a sample of problem vegetables from their garden.

Shimabuku is the interim county administrator and county extension agent in the Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, University of Hawaii at Manoa.
