Rotary club teams up with student council

Kihei Elementary School 5th-grade teachers Taylissa Lehano and Loraine Jordan recently revived the school’s student council after a number of years of inactivity.

Twelve student representatives were selected recently and began planning their first activity, a canned food drive for the Maui Food Bank.

Part-time teacher Joanne Laird, a member of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise, stepped forward to assist with the newly formed student council. The Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise also pledged financial and joint support of the revival of the student council.

In less than eight days, the student council publicized and promoted the collection of over 1,000 food items for the Maui Food Bank. The Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise offered a pizza party for the class with the most collected food items.

“By nurturing youth, Rotarians can provide the skills young people need to succeed as future community leaders,” said Laird, who serves as the youth service chairwoman for the 50 Rotary clubs that make up Rotary District 5000. “Supporting youth programs such as the sponsorship of the Kihei School Student Council provides Rotarians the opportunity to share their own leadership and communication skills with these youngsters and also provides for many incredible moments. The Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise looks forward to many more joint activities with the Kihei School Student Council.”
