AARP volunteers to help with free tax preparation

Volunteers with the AARP Foundation will offer free tax preparation assistance at various sites on Maui beginning Feb. 3. All volunteers are certified in the Tax-Aide Program. There is no need to be a member of AARP to participate.

Tax preparation for low- to moderate-income people will be offered from 9 a.m. until noon at the following sites:

* Kahului Union Church, 101 W. Kamehameha Ave. in Kahului, Rooms 11, 12 and 13, Saturdays beginning Feb. 3 and ending April 11 (except April 4) on a first-come, first-served basis. Do not call the church office.

* Kaunoa Senior Center in Sprecklesville from Feb. 4 to April 15 (except March 18). By appointment only. Call 270-7308.

* West Maui Senior Center, 788 Pauoa St. in Lahaina, first, third and fifth Tuesdays beginning Feb. 3 and ending April 7. By appointment only. Call 661-9432.

* Kihei Community Center, corner of Lipoa Street and Piilani Highway in Kihei. Second and fourth Mondays, beginning Feb. 9 and ending April 13, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Taxpayers need to bring a photo ID and Social Security cards for all family members. If filing jointly, both spouses must be present. Also, bring 2013 federal and state tax returns and current tax documents – W-2s, 1099s (Int., Div., pension or IRA distributions) and evidence of medical insurance.

Those who bought coverage from the Health Insurance Marketplace will need a 1095-A. Free e-filing of returns will be provided.
