Booths available for health festival at mall

Queen Ka’ahumanu Center is accepting booth applications for its “Live Local. Live Healthy” festival from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 14.

Nonprofit organizations, county and state agencies and service companies that focus on health are invited to participate. Entertainment will be ongoing throughout the day, which will include culinary, aerobic and strength fitness demonstrations. Prizes will be announced every hour.

Kwanzaa celebration planned in Wailuku

A Kwanzaa celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 26 at the Iao Parkside Recreational Center, 60 Kapi Lane (across from the Wailuku Community Center). Maui County and the African Americans on Maui Association are sponsors of the event.

AARP’s Smart Driver Class at Kaunoa

AARP’s Smart Driver Class will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville.

These classes are designed for drivers 50 years and older but all adults are welcome to attend. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate.

The fee is $20 (cash or check) and will be collected at the beginning of class. AARP members receive $5 discount with proof of membership. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete this class.

Library to host ‘Be Your Best Elf’ event

Mary Lynn Goode will lead an interactive presentation of holiday season stories and singalong songs as she strums her ukulele at 10 a.m. Thursday at Makawao Public Library. This free “Be Your Best Elf” presentation will include finger plays and crafts.

Whale watch will benefit scholarship

Tickets are now on sale for the American Association of University Women’s annual whale watch cruise, which raises funds for three University of Hawaii Maui College scholarships.

The whale watch cruise will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. March 5. Check-in time will be 2:30 p.m. at the Pacific Whale Foundation’s store in Maalaea.

Tickets are $35 each and include pupu, door prizes and whale watch guides and posters. Naturalists on board will talk about whales, and there will be a cash bar. Checks should be made out to AAUW-Maui Branch.

AAUW offers three scholarships a year to women who have completed two years of post-secondary education and plan to continue their studies at UH-MC.

Hansen ohana collecting gifts for children

The Hansen Ohana Real Estate Group is continuing its annual tradition of collecting gifts for the children of Maui County through Friday. The gifts will be given to The Children’s Justice Center of Maui for distribution.

Holiday Express to benefit cancer patient

Trucker Dukes, a Maui 3-year-old fighting neuroblastoma, and his family will ride Maui’s Sugar Cane Train “Team Trucker” Holiday Express on Thursday. The entire sales of tickets for the two 45-minute rides, 6:30 and 8 p.m., will be donated to the Trucker Dukes Cancer Fund.

Check-in is a the Puukolii Station 30 minutes before the start of the ride. Tickets are $30 per person. Children under the age of 2 are free to ride in the lap of an adult.

At the age of 1, Trucker was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. After two years of treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation and tumor removal in his abdomen and brain, Trucker is home for Christmas for the first time. He continues to battle cancer, but is no longer living in New York where he was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Shelter seeks foster homes for dogs

The Maui Humane Society has an urgent need of short-term foster homes for dogs, according to a news release. With dogs coming in almost daily, the kennels are starting to get uncomfortably crowded, the release states. The Maui Humane Society will provide information and supplies.

Restaurant names T-shirt design winners

Duke’s Beach House recently announced the winners of its fifth annual Holiday T-Shirt Design Contests at its recent seventh anniversary party.

Duke’s named Cynthia Sitorus as both the Duke’s Beach House winner and Facebook fan favorite in the Adult Holiday T-Shirt Design Contest. Megan Fujita of Lahaina Intermediate School was selected as the winner of the Keiki Holiday T-Shirt Design Contest.

Sitorus received $450, and her design was incorporated into a limited edition holiday adult T-shirt. Fujita was awarded a $100 restaurant voucher, and $500 went to her school. Fujita’s teacher at Lahaina Intermediate, Joyce Wada, accepted the check on behalf of the school.

The holiday T-shirts are available for purchase at the Duke’s logo wear counter. The adult shirt is $29.50 and is available in both men’s and women’s sizes. The keiki holiday shirt is available for $20.

The honorable mention keiki winners each received $25 vouchers for the restaurant: Samantha Dyer of Sunset Studio and Kamalii Elementary School; Sophia Abut and Michella Cabingas of Princess Nahienaena Elementary School; Maile Cacal, Glaiza Supnet and Ami Asakawa of Lahaina Intermediate; Taj Newton of Sacred Hearts School; Myles Ferguson of King Kamehameha III Elementary School; Makani Aniban of the Boys and Girls Club; and Alyssa Ferguson of Liberty University Online Academy.
