Student filmmaking program coming to Napili

In spring 2017, Maui Huliau Foundation is partnering with Maui Preparatory Academy in Napili to bring its environmental filmmaking program to west side communities in a condensed format for one semester only.

“In past years we have had students on the west side who cannot participate in our program because it takes place after school in Central Maui,” said Malia Cahill, executive director of Maui Huliau Foundation, “We are very excited to bring this program to west side communities in a new condensed format and help more youth learn filmmaking and share their stories.”

Students in grades 7-12 from all west side schools can apply at www.mauihuliaufoundation.org/hefc before Jan. 11 or until all spots are filled, according to an announcement.

The program fee is $75 including snacks, most transportation and a Huliau T-shirt. Need-based scholarships are also available.

The program meets Feb. 18-19 and March 4 and 11. Filming will take place during part of spring break and editing sessions will be scheduled on weekend days in April. The program will be offered only in Napili for spring 2017, and in fall 2018 new students will again be accepted from all schools for the after-school program at the Hawaiian Canoe Club.
