Pukalani man celebrates 100th birthday

John “Beans” Vierra celebrated his 100th birthday Dec. 4 at his residence in Pukalani with his children Marilyn (John) Freitas and John Leroy (Marlene) Vierra. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren with some friends and family helped celebrate.

Vierra worked for Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. for 42 years as a tractor operator and retired in 1980. He played baseball in the Maui Portuguese League and won the Best Pitcher Trophy in 1950. He also played for Pukalani Makule in the 1970s.

Vierra did some bodybuilding with three-time Olympic medal winner Tommy Kono in Wailuku and entered Mr. Maui in 1966-67, taking second place. He still exercises today.

When asked what his secret is for reaching 100, he said eating three meals a day and no snacking.
