Camp helps 74 students learn to be leaders

Seventy-four Maui County students from nine Maui County high schools gathered recently at Camp Keanae to experience the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp. Maui County’s nine Rotary clubs sponsored this worldwide program. Joanne Laird and Phylecia Platte the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset were the camp directors. The purpose of the camp was to give students an opportunity to participate in quality leadership training experiences and activities. Twenty-four student facilitators led the activities and helped guide the campers in understanding the principles of effective leadership. Student facilitators were selected from the 2016 Camp RYLA participants. The culmination of the three-day program was a graduation ceremony, where Assistant District Govs. Wendy Hornack and Larry Laird presented each camper with a diploma and Camp RYLA pin.
