Forest conservation subject of lecture

Alison Cohan, the Maui nui program director of The Nature Conservancy Hawai’i, will be speaking on the conservancy’s forest conservation efforts in Maui nui at 7 p.m. Friday at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center pool room, 91 Pukalani St. in Pukalani.

The event is sponsored by the Native Hawaiian Plant Society. It is free and open to the public.

Students will show Aikido techniques

There will be a special demonstration of the Japanese martial art of Aikido at 3 p.m. Feb. 19 at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. The Aikido Club of Tokyo’s Keio University will perform throws, locks and other Aikido techniques at the mall’s center stage.

The Keio students will be on Maui to attend an international Aikido seminar sponsored by Maui Ki-Aikido and taught by Shinichi Tohei Sensei, the world’s top instructor of Ki-Aikido. The seminar will be from Friday to Feb. 19 at the Wailuku Gymnasium and is free to the public to watch.

Sail to benefit dance company’s concert

Adaptations Dance Theater, along with Trilogy Excursions, will host “Whale Song,” a sunset sail from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday launching from Maalaea Harbor. Proceeds will benefit the dance company’s second annual “Bring it Home” dance concert.

“Whale Song” is open to all ages and includes heavy pupu, open bar, live music, whale watching and an intimate performance at sea by ADT that will serve as a preview of its “Bring it Home” dance concert in June.

The dance concert is one of ADT’s signature programs and provides a professional opportunity for dancers and choreographers with close ties to Hawaii to share their craft with their home audience. Proceeds from “Whale Song” will cover some of the production and transportation costs associated with bringing home this year’s artists from the Mainland.

A limited number of tickets are available for a minimum donation of $99. Tickets can be purchased at www.adaptationsdancetheater.com. Attendees should plan to arrive at Maalaea Harbor by 3:45 p.m. for an on-time departure at 4 p.m.

Contra Dance set at Makawao church

There will be a Contra Dance from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Makawao Union Church Hall, 1445 Baldwin Ave. in Makawao.

Attendees can dance jigs and reels to the music of local Celtic session musicians. No dancing experience is necessary to participate. A dance instructor/caller will be present to offer instruction.

There is a $5 to $10 suggested donation. Anyone bringing three friends will be admitted for free.

AARP announces Smart Driver Class

AARP’s Smart Driver Class will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville.

These classes are designed for drivers 50 years and older but all adults are welcome to attend. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate.

The fee is $20 (cash or check) and will be collected at the beginning of class. AARP members receive $5 discount with proof of membership. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete this class.

Open house set at Emmanuel Lutheran

Emmanuel Lutheran School will have an open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday to share information about its kindergarten and grade-school program. There will be a spaghetti dinner from 6 to 6:30 p.m., an informational meeting from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and classroom visitation from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

The school is at 520 W. One St. in Kahului, near the intersection of Kaahumanu and Papa avenues.

Guillain Barre, CIPD group plans meeting

The Maui Chapter of Guillain Barre and CIDP (chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy) invites patients, their families, caregivers and interested professionals to its annual meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in a private room at Tante’s Island Cuisine restaurant, 100 W. Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului. The speaker will be Yolanda Rael, an occupational therapist from Hale Makua.

Free panel show theater in Wailuku

A group of students from Shukutoku University in Japan will give a free panel theater performance at Wailuku Jodo Mission, 67 Central Ave., at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The troupe, called “Denden Mushi,” which means snail in Japanese, will perform popular children’s and folk songs, and short stories by animating colorful felt figures. The performance will last 20 minutes and all ages are welcome.

Five school bands to perform concert

The Maui District Middle School Public Massed Band Concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Maui High School Gymnasium.

Performing will be students from the Iao, Kalama, Maui Waena and Lahaina intermediate school bands, along with the Lanai High & Elementary School Band. Admission is free.

Keiki Story Time at Whole Foods

Joanne and Larry Laird, program directors for Read Aloud America Program, will present a Keiki Story Time in the deli seating area at Whole Foods Market at the Maui Mall in Kahului at 2 p.m. Feb. 19. This 30-minute story time is geared for children ages prekindergarten through 2nd grade and will feature popular children’s picture books. There will be healthy snacks provided by Whole Foods Market for the children.

At the conclusion of the read-aloud session, each child will be able to select a brand-new book from the Read Aloud America library to take home. There will also be drawings for door prizes at the conclusion of the program. All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Recycle event set at Lahaina mall

Malama Maui Nui and the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s Go Green Recycle event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Residents can bring a wide range of recyclable goods to the mall parking lot, including appliances, automobile batteries, bicycles, computers, plastics and scrap metal.

The two organizations started the initiative to bring recycling to the west side in July 2015. This year the event has successfully collected 63 tons of recyclable material.

Plantation past theme of program

Mohala Ka Pua Ko, a program featuring a plantation-inspired fashion show by Kulua (Anna Kahalekulu), will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 on the grounds of Hale Ho’ike’ike at The Bailey House in Wailuku.

This reflection of Maui’s plantation past program will include the presentation of “Sugar Cane Days: Remembering Maui’s Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company” by author Jill Engledow.

There will be refreshments and other attractions. Tickets are $20 for the public, $10 for Maui Historical Society members, and free for HC&S retirees and employees.
