Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson subject of talk

Carol Hogard will lead a discussion of the poetry of Emily Dickinson at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Wailuku Public Library.

This lecture will begin with a short selection of Dickinson’s nature poetry and poems that illustrate extreme psychological states.

There will also be a brief sample of poems illustrating her relationship to her internal force — a muse/daemon spirit — the genius of poetry, and a brief introduction to recently available “scrap” poems, “Gorgeous Nothings” and the “Envelope Poems.”

Attendees will also learn how to enter her work using the Hawaii Library system’s collection. A bibliography will be provided. The 90-minute program is free and open to adults and interested students.

Hogard is a retired professor who was part of the team from Minneapolis Community and Technical College that created the first women’s studies program in a community college in the upper Midwest.

For more information, call the library at 243-5766.
