New mural depicts Hawaiian goddess
FIRST PHOTO: Combining his two very diverse loves — graphic arts and marine biology — Kamehameha Schools Maui senior Toby Plunkett painted a mural on the side of an outbuilding at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui’s Haiku Clubhouse, a place he has called a second home for eight years. The mural depicts the Hawaiian Goddess of the Ocean, Namakaokaha’i, ripping invasive algae from the coastal waters.
SECOND PHOTO: While the mural itself is Plunkett’s work, he was generous with the other club members, especially the younger ones, who wanted to be part of the project. On one side of the building are the colorful handprints of many Haiku club members, some of whom had to be lifted up to reach the top of the wall to leave their own mark on the project.
