Youth orchestra will perform Sunday

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra will present its annual Spring Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Baldwin Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature more than 30 student musicians in grades 3-12 on stringed, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The students represent four private schools, 11 public schools and one home-school family.

Auditions for the Philharmonic Orchestra for the 2017-18 season will be announced on the orchestra’s website in June. No audition is need for the violin classes, however the enrollment is limited to 12 students per class. For further information, visit www.mauiyouthphilharmonic.org.

Free document shredding Saturday

AARP Hawaii and Access Corp. are sponsoring the free document shredding and food collection event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Maui Record and Destruction Center, 821 Eha St. near Sack N Save in the Wailuku Industrial Area.

This Fraud Watch Network Shred-a-Thon comes just after tax season when many people discard their obsolete financial documents.

People can drive up and drop off up to two boxes of documents per vehicle. Donations of food, canned goods and money to benefit Maui’s hungry families through the Maui Food Bank will also be accepted.

Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed. Due to safety and traffic-flow concerns, people will not be allowed to get out of their car and boxes and bags will not be returned. Walk-ups will not be allowed.

Event to promote W. Maui greenway

The West Maui Greenway Alliance and Maui Bicycling League’s Love the West Maui Greenway Day, a free Earth Day event intended to build support for the West Maui Greenway project, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The West Maui Greenway project is a proposed 25-mile, multi-use pathway along Maui’s western shore. Love the West Maui Greenway Day will offer information about the project to address the importance of safe walkable and bikeable communities.

Morning activities will include guided exploration rides, a keiki bike rodeo, classes by Good Karma Yoga and hula -hooping.

In the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to refuel at food trucks, learn traditional chants and hula by Old Lahaina Luau staff and listen to entertainment by local musicians.

Educational booths will provide information on bike safety, nutrition, healthy living, environmental concerns and the potential for the WMG as a bikeshare route.

Art night event will benefit Kihei school

Little Monk Seal Montessori kindergarten and preschool invites the community to Art for Education Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at 300 Ohukai Road, No. 206, in Kihei.

This family event will feature photography by Michelle Lazuka for sale, door prizes, pupu, beverages and paintings by Little Monk Seal Montessori’s students.

All proceeds from the night go to the Michael Lazuka Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to deserving families for preschool and kindergarten. The art featured at the event ranges in price from $5 to $500.

Earth Day event at bird sanctuary

The Maui Bird Conservation Center in Olinda will have an Earth Day Celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to share information about Hawaiian birds and conservation. No reservations are required.

Because the center is in breeding season and does not want to disrupt breeding birds, no tours of the birds or facility will be given at this time.

The Blood Bank of Hawaii is seeking donors for its April blood drive on Maui.

• 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27 — Cameron Center Auditorium.

To give blood, donors must be in good health; be 18 years of age or older (17 with signed Blood Bank of Hawaii parent/legal guardian consent form); weigh 110 pounds or more; and present a valid photo ID with date of birth.

Kula AARP will meet on Monday

The regular meeting of the Kula AARP Chapter will be held on Monday at the Kula Community Center. The meeting begins with refreshments at 9 a.m., followed by the program at 9:30.

The speaker will be Judy Guajardo, volunteer coordinator with Na Hoaloha. The community-driven volunteer organization provides essential services such as escorted transportation for doctor’s appointments, groceries and medication pickup for seniors or persons with permanent disabilities.

Programs celebrate Library Week

Hawaii State Public Library System is extending its Library Week celebration throughout the month of April.

The following programs are available:

• Tuesday, 1 p.m. — Storyteller Jeff Gere, “Haunted Hawaii” at Hana Public & School Library. Gere will present original retellings of true supernatural tales of Hawaii.

• April 26, 1:30 p.m. — Storyteller Ben Moffat, “The River of Dreams” at Lanai Public & School Library. Moffat performs this unique storytelling show using stilts, puppets, music and magic.

• April 29, 11 a.m. — Barbara Chung Ho, “Folk Art of Chinese Paper Cutting” at Kahului Public Library. Learn to make a Chinese craft in this hands-on demonstration workshop.

Sunscreen maker to lead discussion

All Good — makers of organic skincare and #ReefFriendly sunscreens — will have two appearances on Maui to educate consumers about the dangers of chemical sunscreens and the effects they have on coral reefs.

The brand will host a community event at Down to Earth in Kahului from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday. All Good will lead a “Chemical vs. Reef Friendly Sunscreen” discussion, and the first 25 people through the door will receive a free #ReefFriendly sunscreen.

All Good will also be at the Ha’iku Ho’olaule’a and Flower Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Haiku Elementary School for a sunscreen swap. Participants can exchange their chemical-based sunscreen for an All Good mineral-based product at no charge.

Bee sanctuary topic of presentation

Erica Tait will speak about the Maui Honey Bee Sanctuary at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei Wailea on Wednesday at Mulligans on the Blue, 100 Kaukahi St. in Wailea.

The goal of the sanctuary is to create a bee-friendly garden and apiary using natural chemical beekeeping methods.

Scavenger hunt to benefit coalition

Down the Hatch restaurant in Lahaina will host an Earth Day Scavenger Hunt Fundraiser from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday to benefit the Save Honolua Coalition.

Open to the community members 21 and older, the scavenger hunt will lead participants around Lahaina, through local businesses and historic sites using different clues.

There is a maximum of four people per team and a $100 entry fee per team, with all the proceeds going to the Save Honolua Coalition.

Dramatic reading at Kihei library

Papa Lopaka (Robert De Vinck) will give a dramatic reading of the Classics Illustrated comic book of Jules Verne’s “From the Earth to the Moon” at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kihei Public Library.

Lopaka is a writer, English literature scholar and longtime reader of classic books. Small snacks will be provided.

Flores de Mayo tickets on sale

In celebration of Flores de Mayo, Queen Sienna Jolie Patao Racoma will crown the Blessed Mother during the 6 p.m. May 12 Mass at St. Theresa Church in Kihei.

This will be followed by entertainment, program and prizes in the garden.

Dinner tickets at $15 each will benefit projects and the scholarship of the Filipino Catholic Club.

Flatbread sales to benefit foundation

Aloha Kai Foundation is having a fundraising night at Flatbread Co. in Paia on Tuesday to raise funds to help enrich and upgrade materials and equipment for programs at the Aloha Kai Academy Paia and Makawao Union sites.

Flatbread Co. will donate $3.50 for each large flatbread and $1.75 for each small flatbread sold during the fundraiser.

Maui Waena plans student showcase

Maui Waena Intermediate School staff and students invite the community to their Student Showcase Night, “Let It Shine!,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the school cafeteria.

In addition to a performance by the school band, there will be student work on display in the cafeteria and library, as well as in the newly opened O Building.

The principal’s welcome at 5:30 will be followed by the band performance. A buffet dinner by Dani’s Catering will be served at 6.

‘Maui Youth Now’ launches at Akaku

Akaku YBEAM alumni have launched a new weekly youth-centric TV show series, “Maui Youth Now.” The series is a semester-long program that trains certified YBEAM alumni in all facets of studio production and is shot live in Akaku’s Studio A at 333 Dairy Road in Kahului. The youth crew will produce 13 shows during the semester.

The selected youths rotate roles each week and produce all video assets for each show. This semester’s crew helped design the two sets used. Youths that successfully fulfill the semester-long criteria are awarded a $400 stipend.

Each new weekly show premieres at 5 p.m. Friday on cable channel 55. Each episode replays throughout the week and then is uploaded to the Maui Youth Now vimeo channel, www.vimeo.com/channels/MYNow.
