Three days of events at Hale Ho‘ike‘ike at The Bailey House

The Institute of Hawaiian Music and Hale Ho’ike’ike at the Bailey House will present Na Mele Kahe Wale from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku.

The event will feature the inaugural Hawaiian Trio Contest, under the direction of Keola Donaghy and the Institute of Hawaiian Music. This contest, which will take place from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m., is open to all ages. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Brad Bordessa, author of “Ukulele Chord Shapes,” will lead an ukulele workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m. There will be a talk-story session from 11:30 to 1 p.m. with the founder of 365 Days of Aloha and Hawaiian archives scholar Noelani Arista, Ph.D. Kenneth Makuakane will lead a songwriting workshop from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., and graduates and current students of the Institute of Hawaiian Music will perform from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Grammy Award-winner Uncle George Kahumoku Jr. will also make at appearance at the event.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Admission is free for kupuna 65 and older and children 12 and younger. General admission is $10. Student admission is $5.

The museum will also debut a historical exhibit titled “Hula: A Maui Tradition” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 30. It will include a premiere of “Hula: The Soul of Hawai’i,” plus food and drinks.

Tickets are $10 at the Bailey House, 2375A Main St. in Wailuku. Beach chairs are welcome.

On May 1, the museum will present its third annual Lei Day Heritage Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The free event will include a lei contest, demonstrations, food and entertainment.
