Miss Maui Filipina 2017 crowned

Kimberly Yap of Lahaina was crowned Miss Maui Filipina 2017 on May 13 at the Binhi At Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului.

Among Yap’s prizes are a scholarship award, a round-trip ticket to the Philippines and a $500 travel allowance. She will represent Maui in the Miss Hawaii Filipina Scholarship Pageant to be held on July 29 on Oahu.

Yap, 19, is the daughter of Ernie Yap and Naomi Maitinnara. She is a 2014 graduate of Lahainaluna High School.

The 58th Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant was presented by the Maui Filipino Community Council.

Yap was named Miss Congeniality and won the interview, swimsuit, talent and speech phases. The first runner-up was Gabrielle Gutierrez, second runner-up was Anianiku Holt-Mossman and third runner-up was Crystal Nartates.

AAUW set to install executive members

American Association of University Women Maui Branch will install its executive board of directors for 2017-18 at its meeting Saturday at Moose McGillycuddy’s, 2511 S. Kihei Road in Kihei.

The business meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the installation at 11 and lunch at noon.

New board members are: Cathy Thompson and Janet Walker, co-presidents; Virginia Shaw, program vice president; Pat Gotschalk, finance officer; and Jennifer Bohlin, secretary.

The Kula Shofukuji Shingon Mission will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the temple at 113 Puanani Place.

For sale will be books, housewares, Asian decorations, clothing and other items.

Pesticide specialist to speak Tuesday

Derek Shigematsu, a pesticide specialist for the state Department of Agriculture, will be the guest speaker at the Maui Association of Landscape Professionals monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University of Hawaii Maui College’s Community Services building in Kahului.

Shigematsu will discuss “Proper Pesticide Use & Safety,” and look at safe versus unsafe practices for poisoning and proper storage and transportation. He will also discuss understanding types as well as formulations of pesticides, the use of personal protective equipment and proper handling. He will address existing pesticide laws and regulations.

Certification credits for pesticide, certified arborist and landscape industry certified technicians will be given for attending the talk.

This event is free and open to the public.

Nursing program to be discussed

Anne Scharnhorst, the department chairwoman at the University of Hawaii Maui College’s Allied Health Department, will be the guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Maui meeting at noon Thursday at Tante’s Island Cuisine in Kahului.

Scharnhorst, a registered nurse, will discuss the accomplishments of Maui County’s only nursing program.

She will give an update on the college’s nursing program and opportunities with Kaiser Permanente’s upcoming management of Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Fourth Friday party planned in Kihei

Kihei’s Fourth Friday Town Party will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Azeka Shopping Center Mauka.

There will be entertainment, activities for children and teens, food booths, food trucks, art, crafts and shopping.

Smart Driver Class to be held Thursday

AARP’s Smart Driver Class will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Kaunoa Senior Center at 401 Alakapa Place in Spreckelsville.

The class is designed for drivers 50 years and older, although all adults are welcome. Emphasis is on becoming more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate.

A $20 fee, cash or check, will be collected at the beginning of the class. AARP members receive a $5 discount with proof of membership.

Chamber to honor service June 14

The Gintong Pamana (Golden Heritage) Leadership Award will be presented to five individuals at 5 p.m. June 14 at the Maui Beach Hotel, Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce President Sharon Zalsos announced.

The award winners are Khara Jabola-Carolus, Hayde Sim, Venus Rosete Medeiros, Corrine Reyes Arquero and James “Kimo” Simpliciano.

Keiki Story Time set for May 28

A Keiki Story Time will be held at 2 p.m. May 28 at the deli seating area at Whole Foods Market in Kahului. It is led by Joanne and Larry Laird, program directors for the Read Aloud America Program.

The 30-minute story time is geared for ages pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade and will feature children’s picture books.

Healthy snacks will be provided by Whole Foods Market. At the conclusion of the session, each child will be able to select a new book to take home.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Memorial bicycle ride is Saturday

The Maui Bicycling League will hold a “Memorial Ride of Silence” at 9 a.m. Saturday to honor bicyclists who have been killed or injured while riding.

The ride will begin at the Target parking lot in Kahului and head to north Kihei. After a break, the ride will return to Target.

The group will ride in silence at 12 mph maximum. Participants should wear white shirts/jerseys to honor the bicyclists.

Donations of food and water are being sought for aid stations at the halfway point and end. Volunteers are also needed.

Pint night to benefit birds

The Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project will have a pint night at The Maui Brewing Co. brewpub from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday. Half of the pub’s profits from house beers sold will go toward protecting native birds.

The brewpub is located at 4405 Honoapiilani Highway in the Kahana Gateway Shopping Center.

Hale Makua Health Services elected its board of directors at the annual meeting March 15.

Returning to the board is Michael Munekiyo, president of Munekiyo Hiraga. New to the board are sports broadcaster Kanoa Leahey and Ed Romson, principal and founder of Rocair Corp. Paul Hiranaga, controller at Wailea Golf Club, and Alec McBarnet, president and CEO at Maui Oil Co., have been re-elected to the board.
