Officer Marvin Tevaga received the School Resource Officer Mahalo Pancake Award at an appreciation breakfast Tuesday for Maui Police Department school resource officers.

Tevaga, who is school resource officer at King Kekaulike High School, was nominated for his “extreme dedication and time in his job, including playing benefit concerts for the school,” according to a news release from Maui Crime Stoppers Inc., which hosted the breakfast at IHOP at Maui Mall. Brian Klaschka, Maui Crime Stoppers president, thanked officers for “all of the things they do to keep their students, teachers and schools safe.”

Sgt. Terence Gomez supervises the school resource officers. They include Jonathan Honda at Maui High, Trinidad Alconcel at Baldwin High, Stuart Farberow at Lahainaluna High, John Aquino at Molokai High, Jason Thompson at Hana High, Stanislav Kraytchev at Lanai High, Brandon Phillips at Iao Intermediate, Ryan Nagata at Maui Waena Intermediate, Frank “Keola” Abreu at Kalama Intermediate and Nichole Comilang at Lokelani Intermediate.

School resource officers are assigned to intermediate and high schools, serving as liaisons between the Police Department and state Department of Education. Officers work to build relationships with students, and many are involved in coaching youth sports.

Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu, Prosecuting Attorney John D. Kim and Special Agent J.D. Rudow of the Maui office of the FBI also attended the breakfast.Through its hotline at 242-6966, the nonprofit Maui Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards for anonymous tips that lead to the arrest and indictment of people for felony crimes.
