‘Picture Bride Stories’ topic of presentation

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i, in partnership with the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui and the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, will host a special presentation and book-signing at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Kahului with Barbara F. Kawakami, author of “Picture Bride Stories.” She is the 2016-17 winner of The Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association award for Literature Adult Non-Fiction.

Based on Kawakami’s interviews with 16 women, “Picture Bride Stories” recounts the diverse circumstances that led them to marry strangers, their voyages to Hawaii, the surprises and trials that they encountered upon arriving and the lives they led upon settling in a strange new land.

The program will include a screening of excerpts of interviews with some of the women featured in “Picture Bride Stories” that were conducted with Kawakami for various segments of the “Rice & Roses” television series.

This event is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested by emailing deidre@nvmc.org.
