Kihei resident wins award for his ‘public participation’ work

Creighton

James L. Creighton of Kihei has been awarded the Greater Good Award by the International Association for Public Participation USA. According to association President Leah Jaramillo, the award was given in recognition of Creighton’s “exemplary contributions in service, mentorship and advocacy of public participation.”

Public participation is the process by which government agencies and companies consult with interested or affected individuals, organizations and government entities before making a decision, according to an announcement. Public participation prevents or minimizes disputes by creating a process for resolving issues before they become polarized.

Creighton has designed and conducted more than 300 public participation programs. His work has addressed many controversial issues, including prescribed burns, water quality regulations, closure of nuclear plants, siting of nuclear waste repositories, toxic waste cleanup, electric rates, closure of coal-fired power plants, siting of transmission lines, land use planning, global climate change and low-cost housing.

He is the author of three texts on public participation and his books on public participation are assigned reading in classes at a number of universities, including Harvard, Texas, Rutgers, Edinburgh, Virginia and other U.S. and international universities. He has conducted training in Egypt, Israel, Brazil, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Russia and the Republic of Georgia.

Creighton is co-author of the international best-seller “Getting Well Again,” which has been translated into 17 languages and has sold more than 1 million copies worldwide.

Creighton is also the author of a popular-market book “Don’t Go Away Mad: How to Make Peace with Your Partner,” which is currently available in paperback as “How Loving Couples Fight” (Aslan, 1998).

While promoting his books, Creighton has appeared on more than 100 radio and television shows, including “The View,” the “Sally Jessy Raphael” show, “The Montel Williams Show” and “The Home Show.”
