Auction to benefit cancer patients

Four Seasons Resort Maui will present its inaugural “Showcase Under the Stars” art auction event from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday. More than 45 Maui artists have donated works of art for the auction to benefit local cancer patients. Proceeds from the event will go to Pacific Cancer Foundation, Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children and American Cancer Society.

Featured artists include painters Lori Koprowski, Kari McCarthy, Melissa Chimera and Jan Kasprzycki, as well as sculptor Tim Garcia, photographer Scott Reither and others representing a variety of mediums such as glass, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics and more. The pieces available at the fundraiser are valued collectively at more than $120,000.

The cost of admission is $50. In addition to being granted access to the art auction, the ticket includes a meet-and-greet with the artists, passed hors d’ouevres created by the resort’s culinary team and live entertainment.

Forest restoration trip on Saturday

Auwahi Forest Restoration Project volunteers will meet at Ulupalakua Ranch Store on Saturday for an 8 a.m.-to-4 p.m. work excursion. Due to rough, steep terrain, hiking boots that cover the ankle are required.

Volunteers should pack layered clothing, rain gear, two liters of water, lunch, sunscreen and a hat. There is a limited number of four-wheel drive vehicles and limited room for volunteers. Maui author will sign her new book

Maui author Malia Bohlin will have a book-signing at the Maui Friends of the Library store in the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday for her coming-of-age tale, “Left at Hiva Oa.”

The story follows the dreams and plans of two recent U.S. Merchant Marine Academy graduates as they set out on an around-the-world sailing adventure on their 40-foot schooner, the Gracias.

“Left at Hiva Oa” is based on a true story about Bohlin’s father, Capt. Ken Bohlin, who worked as a Hawaii harbor pilot for 15 years, primarily at Kahului Harbor. He later served as captain of the tugboat Joe Sevier.

Bohlin was born in Honolulu and raised on Maui. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, benefitting Maui Friends of the Library.

Two conservation interships available

The Na Hua Ho’ohuli i ka Pono Spring 2018 Program has two internship positions available with each of the following agencies: Maui Invasive Species Committee, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project.

Applicants will be selected through a competitive process that includes a formal application, criminal history check and interview. Interns will earn a biweekly living allowance of $475 and are eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award that may be applied toward higher education costs or student loans.

Candidates must be available for 19 hours a week from Jan. 22 to May 11. Students are responsible for their own transportation and housing accommodations. Completed applications and all required documents must be received by 8 a.m. Nov. 27.

Church will cook turkeys in imu

Pukalani Community Church of the Nazarene invites people to drop off their prepared turkeys from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday for roasting it its imu. Church volunteers will cook it for free. Pickup is 9-10 a.m. Thursday.

Thawed turkeys, 25 pounds maximum weight, must be placed in a pan and wrapped with foil and secured with duct tape, wire or similar material. No whole pigs will be accepted.

Lions to create gifts for the homeless

Lahaina’s Mauna Kahalawai Lions Club Branch, a branch of Maui Lions Club, plans to distribute hygiene bags to the homeless not living in shelters this holiday season. The club invites the community to donate any small items such as soaps, shampoos or any items associated with hygiene practices, personal health care and preventative measures to reduce the incidence and spreading of disease.

All donations can be dropped off in the collection bin at Napa Auto Parts in Lahaina from Monday through Dec. 5.

The club is hoping to pass out around 200-250 hygiene packs and asks area businesses to contribute as well.

Paddle for Hunger registration open

Registration is open at www.paddleforhunger.com for the Paddle for Hunger event Thursday at Kihei Canoe Club to benefit the Maui Food Bank.

Organized by Hawaiian Paddle Sports, last year’s Paddle For Hunger raised a record-breaking $8,000 and 1,050 pounds of food for Maui Food Bank, enough to feed 33,400 needy families in Maui County.

Paddle for Hunger is an anything-that-floats, untimed “race” fundraiser. Check-in is at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to attend. Nonperishable food items, canned goods and monetary donations are welcome. Checks can be made payable to “Maui Food Bank.” All donations to Maui Food Bank are tax-deductible. For any donations of $25 of more, guests will receive a Paddle For Hunger T-shirt.

Food donations are also being accepted through Wednesday at Nalu’s South Shore Grill in Kihei from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Look for the wooden canoe with the “Paddle For Hunger” sign.

Rotary Club of Kahului selling trees

Christmas tree sales from the Rotary Club of Kahului are underway for distribution Dec. 1 and 2.

This annual fundraiser is being held to benefit college scholarship programs, youth literacy programs and local community service projects.

Holiday campaign begins on Friday

The Burger King Hawaii goal for this year’s Salvation Army Angel Tree Program fundraiser is $10,000, making the holiday season a little merrier for local keiki.

From Friday through Dec. 24, when restaurant guests pay for their orders at the register or drive-thru window, they will be invited to add a cash contribution of any size and to sign an “Angel Tree” tag. The tags will then be displayed in the participating store.

Recording artist to perform concert

Pianist and former Maui resident Nadejda Vlaeva will present a concert of Beethoven, Liszt and Bortkiewicz at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Makawao Union Church. Vlaeva is an internationally renowned artist who records on the Hyperion label in the United Kingdom.

There is a $10 minimum cash donation at the door on the night of the concert.

Toy drive will begin Friday at QKC

A Holiday Toy Drive sponsored by Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in partnership with Pacific Media Group and Maui United Way will begin Friday and run through Dec. 17.

Unwrapped gifts for keiki up to age 18 may be dropped off at QKC Center Court Holiday Toy Drive Bin during center hours, or at the Pacific Media Group office, located at 311 Ano St. in Kahului, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With every gift donation of retail value $5 or more, the donor (21 years or older) may enter for a chance to win a Las Vegas getaway. A one-time entry is also available for those who wish to enter without providing a gift.

Jamba Juice will also be providing $1-off coupons for every donation received.

Rummage sale set at Good Shepherd

Team 4ever Family ‘n’ Friends is having a rummage sale from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to help defray the cost of the necessary food purchases for its upcoming mini-luau at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church’s Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen.

The team’s annual mini-luau will fall on New Year’s Eve at the parish hall of the church, located at 2140 Main St. in Wailuku.

Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen opens its doors every Sunday to feed the hungry.

Keiki story time at Whole Foods

Joanne Laird, program director for Read Aloud America Program, will present a Holiday Keiki Story Time in the deli seating area at Whole Foods Market in the Maui Mall at 2 p.m. Nov. 26.

This 30-minute story time is geared for children ages prekindergarten through 2nd grade. There will be healthy snacks provided by Whole Foods Market for the children.

At the conclusion of the read-aloud session, each child will be able to select a brand-new book from the Read Aloud America library to take home. There will also be drawings for door prizes. All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

St. Ann Church in Waihee will have a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 40 Kuhinia St. Sale items will include clothing for children, men and women, household items and furniture.

Photos with Santa are being offered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center through Dec. 24 at Santa’s village, located on the first level, north wing.

Student art exhibit at Kihei Charter

The Kihei Charter High School’s new Interact Club is hosting a student art exhibit Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 at 330 Ohukai Road in Kihei. The club is supported by the Rotary Club of Kihei Wailea.

All pieces will be for sale, and the proceeds will be split between the artists and the club.

Money that goes to the Interact Club will fund future community service projects.
