The Pa‘ia Youth & Cultural Center plans Beachfest

The Pa’ia Youth & Cultural Center and Positively+KAI will present the 21st annual Paia Bay Beachfest on Saturday and Jan. 21.

The family-oriented bodyboard and surf competition, dubbed BEACHFEST 21, will feature special guests, including world champion waterman Kai Lenny and International Bodyboarding Association world tour champion Dave Hubbard. Additionally, there will be a special cash-prize division for pro/am bodyboarders and a chance to see the pros in action.

The event will be held on the beach side of the PYCC facility at Paia Bay. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the first heat is in the water at 8 a.m. after a blessing and oli by the Rev. Robert Kuya Alamodin. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

Competitors will be treated to a plate lunch prepared by the youths of the PYCC Pa’ia Bay Cafe program, and will also receive a collectors T-shirt. Food and T-shirts will also be on sale to the public.

The competition is being organized by Marlon Tumacder, PYCC alumni, community board-riders and PYCC staff.

The event is $20 to enter before event day, $30 to enter on event day and free to watch. Event registration closes at 9:30 a.m. on event day.
