60 join Rotary leadership camp

Alexis Dascoulias, past president of the Rotary Club of Kahului, answers questions from campers at the “Leaders Speed Dating” segment of Camp RYLA.

Sixty students from nine Maui County high schools gathered at YMCA Camp Keanae to experience the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp program Jan. 13-15. This worldwide program was sponsored by the nine Maui County Rotary clubs.

The Maui Camp RYLA was directed by Joanne Laird and Phylecia Platte, members of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset. The curriculum director was Wendy Acosta from the Rotary Club of Valley Island Sunset.

The purpose of the camp was to give the students an opportunity to participate in leadership training experiences.

Activities were led by 15 student facilitators selected from the 2017 Camp RYLA participants.

Some of the workshop topics included “The Nuggets of Leadership,” “Respect, Ethics Using the Rotary Four-Way Test” and “Finding your Spark.”

Students participated in a cultural community service project of helping to clean a kalo field in Keanae.

They also had the opportunity to meet 10 Rotary leaders from around Maui County.

The culmination of the three-day program was a graduation ceremony, where each camper was presented with a diploma and Camp RYLA pin by Rotary District Gov. Nalani Flinn from the Rotary Club of Waianae, Oahu.
