Dinner show celebrates spring; early music

Early Music Maui and the Maui Madrigale will celebrate spring with a dinner show at Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Combining both Irish traditional songs and instrumental music, 20 performers in costume will present music of yesteryear, especially composed to reflect the spring season.

Guests will be treated to a dinner provided by restaurant owner Mike O’Dwyer while instrumentalists play lively Irish music in the background. After dinner, the Maui Madrigale will present a concert of traditional pieces celebrating spring. The audience will have a chance to dance and sing along with the group. Price for the meal and entertainment is $60.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling Mulligans at 250-8288.

Free document shredding offered Saturday

AARP Hawai’i and Access Corp. are sponsoring the free document shredding and food collection from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Maui Record and Destruction Center, 821 Eha St. in the Wailuku industrial area.

People can drive up and drop off up to two boxes of documents per vehicle. Due to safety and traffic-flow concerns, people will not be allowed to get out of their car and boxes and bags will not be returned. Walk-ups will not be allowed. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed from documents.

Access Corp. requires a signed document release form before it will shred documents. Forms can be downloaded at aarp.cvent.com/shred4-28 and signed before dropping off papers.

The AARP Fraud Watch Network was launched in 2013 as a free resource for people of all ages. The website provides information about fraud and scams, prevention tips from experts, an interactive scam-tracking map, educational quizzes and video presentations featuring Fraud Watch Network Ambassador Frank Abagnale.

Users may sign up for “Watchdog Alert” emails that deliver breaking scam information, or call a free helpline at (877) 908-3360 to speak with volunteers trained in fraud counseling.

BHS seeks old phone books for recycling

Baldwin High School is participating in Vivial’s 10th annual Outdated Phone Directory Recycling Contest.

Old phone books are being accepted at the school’s front office until May 18. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Outdated phone books are also being accepted at Maui Disposal Co., 380 Alamaha St. in Kahului every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 8 and 11 a.m. The school requests that people donate phone books in Baldwin’s name.

‘Yoga for Peace’ event at Lahaina park

“Yoga for Peace” will take place at 8:30 a.m. April 29 at the Lahaina Public Library Park. This free vinyasa yoga class is being presented by Mariah Gill, a certified yoga instructor who currently teaches at Afterglow Yoga Studio in Lahaina.

Participants should bring a towel, mat and water.

Food innovation topic for guest speaker

Chris Speere of the Maui Food Innovation Center at University of Hawaii Maui College will be guest speaker at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei Wailea on Wednesday at Mulligans on the Blue. Speere will talk about his duties with the college.

Keiki Story Time offered at ocean center

Joanne Laird, program director for Read Aloud America Program, will present a Keiki Story Time in the Makai Theater of the Maui Ocean Center at 1:30 p.m. April 29. This 30-minute story time is geared for children ages pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade and will feature popular ocean-themed children’s picture books. There will be healthy snacks provided by Maui Ocean Center for the children.

At the conclusion of the read-aloud session, each child will be able to select two brand-new books from the Read Aloud America library to take home. There will also be drawings for door prizes at the conclusion of the program.

Space is limited to 20 families and reservations must be made in advance at readaloudamerica.eventbrite.com. The first 20 families who register will receive a confirmation and meeting location.

Wellness activity for entrepreneurs

SPACESMaui will present a workplace wellness activity called “Work, Play & Picnic: Finding Balance” from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Wednesday at 37 Makawao Ave. in Pukalani next to the Pukalani Superette.

Megan Nolan, owner of Vitality Wellness, will lead an outdoor, 25-minute hands-on wellness class to empower and educate entrepreneurs. Afterward, participants will lunch picnic style for a 20-minute Q&A with Nolan, who leads workplace wellness programs for companies such as First Hawaiian Bank, Goodfellow Bros. and many other small businesses on Maui. She is a certified personal trainer and yoga teacher.

Participants are asked to bring a $10 cash offering, yoga mat or towel, sack lunch, water bottle, picnic blanket or pillow.

Smart Driver Class offered in Lahaina

AARP’s Smart Driver Class will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the West Maui Senior Center, 788 Pauoa St. in Lahaina.

The class is designed for drivers 50 years and older, but all adults are welcome to attend. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate. The $20 fee (cash or check) will be collected at the beginning of the class. AARP members receive a $5 discount with proof of membership. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete the class.

Mysticism scholar to lead workshops

David Solomon, an internationally acclaimed scholar, teacher, writer and translator from Australia, is coming to Maui to give workshops about mysticism as part of his North America tour.

According to an announcement, Solomon will take his audience on a journey through the often confusing field of Kabbalah while teaching how to elevate one’s personal journey and use these transformative teachings to create a more meaningful and fulfilled life.

The teaching schedule is as follows:

• 7 p.m., May 6 — Solomon will explore Zoharic and other deep-level Kabbalistic texts at Heritage Hall, 401 Baldwin Ave. in Paia. Doors open at 6 p.m.; cost is $20.

• 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 7 and 8 — An intensive study of the Tiqunei HaZohar texts of Jewish mysticism. The cost is $260 (limited to 15 people ). Location to be determined.

DFMusicMaui and the Community Music Program at Wailuku Union Church will present a recital by piano students at 1 p.m. Saturday in the church at 327 S. High St. in Wailuku. Admission is free.

Lecture at Keokea Farmers Market

Kevin Collins, president of Tsunami Products of Liberty Lake, Wash., will demonstrate portable fog-drip and sprouted-fodder machines from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Keokea nursery located at Mile Marker 16.7 of Kula Highway, next to Grandma’s Coffee House.

The fog-and-fodder demo is part of the biweekly Keokea Farmers Market from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second and last Saturdays of the month, with a mini-lecture series on farming/ranching-related topics.

Event organizers ask attendees to bring a sweater or jacket and a chair.
