St. Anthony student wins essay contest

Hope Otani, a St. Anthony High School sophomore, took first place in annual National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Christopher Columbus Essay Contest for Maui and the state. She won $200.

Otani is a student in history teacher Anita Dunn’s class. Overall, 23 students in Dunn’s class participated in the contest.

This is the second year in a row that a St. Anthony student has won at the state level, according to a news release.

The theme of the 2018-2019 contest that begins in the fall is “Comparing Ship Technology: The Ships Columbus Used Versus the Ships of Today.”
