Rep. Woodson honored as Legislative Champion

State Rep. Justin Woodson was recently recognized as a 2018 Legislative Champion by the nonprofit education support group HawaiiKidsCAN during a ceremony at Maui High School.

According to David Miyashiro, executive director of HawaiiKidsCAN, the Legislative Champions recognition is intended to highlight legislative leaders — one each from the House and Senate — who work to advance aligned legislation while operating with a spirit of community collaboration.

Woodson, chair of the House Education Committee, said working with the community to provide students with the best schools, teachers and curriculum possible gives them the best chance for success in their lives.

“We worked hard this past legislative session to provide avenues of quality public education for our students, like with the passage of Act 51 which helps to better prepare our kids to complete in technologically advancing industries,” he said. “I am truly humbled and honored by this acknowledgment and I look forward to the ways this award will benefit students of Maui High School.”

Miyashiro said Woodson (Kahului, Puunene, Old Sand Hills, Maui Lani) is the first recipient of the award and his leadership was critical in expanding opportunities for students in his district and beyond. The group presented a $500 gift to the Maui High in Woodson’s name to show support for public education in his House district.

Founded in 2017, HawaiiKidsCAN works to build an equitable education system ensuring every student has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success.
