Molokai musicians participate in program

In partnership with Kaunakakai Elementary School teacher Bob Underwood, the Hawaii Youth Symphony hosted its Molokai Strings Program June 23 and 24, providing workshops for students to receive private lessons from experienced musicians Helen Liu (violin), Colin Belisle (viola) and Bob Underwood, while also learning four songs and performing as a string orchestra.

The program consisted of weekendlong workshops in which students could receive group and private instruction, the first opportunity for many students to receive private lessons.

“Molokai has a rich musical history, which connects students to music and builds a community,” said Randy Wong, president of Hawaii Youth Symphony. “The Molokai Strings workshop is just the beginning as the program has received tremendous praise from participants and support from donors wishing to create opportunities for young musicians to develop their appreciation for the arts.”

Inspired by the impact that the Molokai Strings workshop had on the Friendly Isle’s students and community, the Youth Symphony received a donation of $2,000 from its donors, which will be utilized to continue the program for Molokai students.
