Kenneth and Edith Kong

Kenneth and Edith Kong celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 29. They were married by Father Joseph Putman at Christ the King Church in Kahului.

Kenneth Kong was a civil engineer at Maui County Public Works Department. Under Mayor Elmer Cravalho, he was also the first director of Parks and Recreation and the first manager of the Maui Redevelopment Agency.

As the head of the Division of Sewers, he oversaw the design and construction of the sewage treatment plants in Kahului, Kihei and Lahaina. He also reviewed and processed all land subdivision applications with the Land Use and Codes Administration.

He was an avid bowler and played in the Seniors Softball League.

He was one of the original members of the Kahului Aces and still plays at the Kahului Community Center tennis courts on Sundays.

Edith Kong was an admitting clerk at Maui Memorial Hospital and was a dancer with the Kaunoa Senior Citizens Hula Program for many years. She now tends to her orchids and enjoys yard work.

The Kongs still reside in Kahului.
