The sold-out 40th Anniversary Benefit Concert for the Montessori School of Maui was held in the Root Family Center and adjacent lanai April 7.

The event opened with some brief remarks by Head of School Eric L. Dustman in which he acknowledged the rich history of the school, the support it has received from the community over the years, and a shout-out to some of the students who attended and have pursued successful careers in music.

The music opened with Pat Simmons Jr. and his new band followed by surprise guest Lily Meola and her band. Particle Kid performed next with a highly vibrant projected “light show” reminiscent of the liquid projections popular in the San Francisco Fillmore Auditorium period. Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real came on last and thoroughly pleased the crowd with a mixture of their most popular hits and outstanding covers of Paul Simon’s “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” and Tom Petty’s “American Girl.”

Nelson pointed out his “Tom Petty” hat to the crowd in homage to the great rock ‘n’ roller. Attendees were encouraged to donate to the Cynthia Winans-Burns Scholarship Fund to further increase the school’s ability to offer scholarship to qualified students in the community. Food was provided by Mendo Maui, Sea Salt Maui and The Maui Hamburger Co., which donated 25 percent of their sales to fundraiser.
