First baby of 2013
Not even 12 hours old, Kaikane DeCoite snoozes in the arms of mom Kawailani DeCoite-Alcoran, 23, while dad Joerod Duarte, 23, watches nearby at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Little Kaikane arrived at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, making him the first baby born on Maui, and possibly in the state, in the new year. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 12.8 ounces and measured 20 inches long. Hospital officials told the Pukalani couple that the hospital had been contacted by Honolulu news media because Kaikane was believed to be the state’s first baby of 2013. DeCoite-Alcoran went through nearly 21 hours of labor, after starting at 4 a.m. Monday. When asked how she felt about having Maui’s New Year’s baby, she said it was “pretty cool.” Kaikane, which means “powerful sea,” is DeCoite-Alcoran’s third child. She has two other boys – Nalu and Kaimana DeCoite, 7 and 4 years old, respectively. Duarte has two boys from another relationship, Blaze, 4, and Kason, 2.
