First traffic fatality of year on New Year’s Day

A 61-year-old Haiku woman died Tuesday night after a Toyota Camry she was a passenger in collided with a Toyota pickup truck at the intersection of Kahului Beach Road and Wahine Pio Avenue in Kahului, police said.

Police said Constance Scott suffered fatal injuries in the 6:50 p.m. collision. She was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center’s Emergency Room and died at 8:05 p.m.

The driver of the 1994 silver Camry, a 64-year-old man, was taken to the hospital where he remained in stable condition Wednesday, police said.

The 31-year-old man who was driving the red 1989 Toyota pickup and his passenger, a 35-year-old man, did not suffer any injuries.

The incident occurred when the Toyota Camry that was traveling north on Kahului Beach Road attempted to execute a left turn onto Wahine Pio Avenue. As the Camry made its turn, the vehicle was broadsided by the truck traveling south and within the left inner lane of Kahului Beach Road, police said.

Scott and the male driver were wearing seat belts, and the vehicle’s front airbags also deployed.

The men in the truck were wearing seat belts.

Traffic was rerouted in the area for about six hours as police conducted its investigation. The crash remains under investigation.

This is Maui County’s first fatal crash of 2013. There were none at this time last year.
