Glimpse of past beneath old post office
First photo: Demolition crews working at the site of the old Wailuku Post Office/Federal Building discovered a time capsule dating back to 1959, the year ground was broken for construction of the building. Workers for Betsill Brothers Construction were in the process of carefully removing the cornerstone of the building when they discovered a rectangular metal canister underneath it.
Second photo: Managing Director Keith Regan removed the box. The time capsule was opened and inside was a copy of The Maui News from Sept. 19, 1959; a letter from the general contractor who built the building and a book of blueprints for the building. The more-than-50-year-old building was being demolished because of asbestos, black mold and other structural issues.
