High-surf warning for Maui, Molokai shores
The National Weather Service has posted a high-surf warning for north- and west-facing shores of Molokai and north-facing shores of Maui through 6 p.m. today.
A long period northwest swell will build overnight and peak early today in most areas, resulting in surf higher than warning levels along exposed north- and west-facing shores. Surf along north-facing shores is expected to build to 20 to 30 feet and to 15 to 20 feet along west-facing shores.
The surf is expected to diminish below warning levels late today.
High surf is expected to sweep across portions of beaches and create strong breaking waves. Longshore and rip currents will make for dangerous swimming conditions.
Only experienced swimmers should enter the water. Others should remain off beaches and adjacent beachfront areas.
Breaking waves may occasionally make navigating the harbor channel dangerous.
