Man is charged in sex case

A Makawao man was charged with sexually assaulting a woman who reported that he forced himself on her while they were in his vehicle at the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao, police said.

Kipp Haole, 40, was released after posting $70,000 bail on charges of first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping.

He was arrested Saturday morning after the woman reported at 1:49 a.m. that she had been sexually assaulted by Haole, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the woman met Haole in Makawao at about 9 p.m. Friday, and she agreed to have dinner with him. After dinner, they went in his vehicle to the cemetery on Baldwin Avenue. She told police that he wanted to have sex with her, and she told him no, but he forced himself on her, Rego said.

The woman called police after Haole took her home, he said.

According to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center, Haole has 37 prior criminal convictions dating to 1993.

In October, he was released from the Maui Community Correctional Center after being incarcerated for about three months for first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree assault, second-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree assault and seven counts of violating an order for protection in three cases.

He also has convictions for first- and second-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree criminal property damage, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, disorderly conduct and contempt of court, according to state records.
