Wailuku robbery of German tourists under investigation

Police are investigating the robbery early Monday of two German tourists who were accosted by three men, including one with a knife, on Mill Street in Wailuku.

The visitors, ages 26 and 24, had their backpacks stolen during the robbery at about 1:30 a.m. near Tasty Crust restaurant, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the tourists had left a bar on Lower Main Street and were walking to Banana Bungalow when they were confronted by the three men, who demanded the visitors’ phones and backpacks. One man brandished a knife with a 6- to 7-inch blade, Rego said.

After taking the backpacks, all three men ran down Mill Street, Rego said.

He said one backpack contained property valued at $2,400 and the other held property valued at $1,950. Neither visitor was injured.

The robber with the knife was described as 25 to 30 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 170 to 190 pounds. He had black hair, a tattoo on his upper right forearm and was missing a front tooth. Another suspect was described as 20 to 22 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall and slim, weighing 150 to 165 pounds. He had blond hair.

The robbers may have followed the visitors from the bar, Rego said.

Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 244-6425 or Maui Crime Stoppers at 242-6966.
