Woman arrested after fall through roof

A woman who fell through the rafters and into the prisoner processing room at the Kihei Police Station was arrested and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation Monday, police said.

The 34-year-old woman didn’t complain of pain and had no observable injuries after falling through the 9- to 10-foot-high ceiling and landing on the floor at 12:07 p.m., police said. She was immediately detained by officers in the building.

Police said preliminary investigation showed she may have entered the crawl space above the ceiling from somewhere outside the building, which is in the Kihei Town Center at 1881 S. Kihei Road. She caused damage to the ceiling area of the prisoner processing room and several other ceiling panels in other rooms in the building, police said.

A police Crisis Intervention Team officer trained in dealing with mentally ill people took the woman to the hospital. She was arrested for investigation of second-degree criminal property damage, second-degree criminal trespassing, second-degree criminal tampering and disorderly conduct.

Prisoners from South Maui are being transported to the Wailuku Police Station until damage at the Kihei station is repaired, police said. A separate self-contained cell in the same area in the station wasn’t damaged.
