Church again target of heavy rains, flooding

A Happy Valley church that sustained flood damage from heavy rain Monday again saw waters rise on its property Thursday following more rainfall, a fire official said.

Although not as severe as Monday’s episode, the Living Way Church of Maui again experienced high water on its property from heavy rain and overwhelmed drains. Water on the property was 18 to 20 inches deep in some places, less than the 2 to 3 feet Monday, a fire official said.

A Wailuku fire crew assisted with the cleaning of drains Thursday morning.

In the 24-hour period ending at 2 p.m. Thursday, 1.2 inches of rain fell in Wailuku. Puu Kukui in the West Maui Mountains received the most rain at 2.25 inches in the same period. Haiku got 1.22 inches in the same 24-hour period.

A high-surf warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. today for north- and west-facing shores of Molokai and north-facing shores of Maui, the National Weather Service said.

A storm in the north Pacific has generated a large northwest swell that was expected to continue to build Thursday night.

Surf heights were expected to hit 15 to 20 feet Thursday night, peaking early today and diminishing throughout the day.

Beachgoers need to exercise caution due to large surf and sweeping waves; swimmers need to be aware of dangerous rip currents.

Boaters should be aware of increased numbers of surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.
