Man arrested in robbery, assault of pizza delivery driver

A suspect was arrested in the robbery, assault and kidnapping of a pizza delivery driver in Waiehu last year, following a police stop of a stolen moped in Haiku this week.

Pahukuloa Kahue, 18, of Haiku was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, kidnapping and three counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $82,000.

Kahue was arrested Monday after Wailuku patrol officers stopped a stolen moped near Hookipa Beach Park. The operator said he got the moped from Kahue and police went to his residence, where they found two stolen mopeds, police said.

One had been stolen Jan. 25 from Haiku Cannery Mall. The other was reported stolen Jan. 28 from Maui Mall.

After being arrested for the moped thefts, Kahue was interviewed by police detectives, who arrested and charged him in connection with the Dec. 17 robbery of a pizza delivery driver, police said.

That night, the 41-year-old driver had been delivering pizzas on Kaae Road in Waiehu when he was assaulted by several males and lost consciousness. He woke up on Malaihi Road, where police responded to an 8:15 p.m. report of a man with bloody facial injuries asking for help. The victim apparently was driven in his car to Malaihi Road before the car was returned to the Kaae Road area, where it was found, police said.

Police said an investigation is continuing into the robbery. Police also are continuing to investigate robberies in the following days of a man at Makena State Park and another man at his residence in Wailuku Heights.

The Makena robbery occurred the evening of Dec. 18 when a 63-year-old Wailuku man was assaulted at the park toilet facilities. Valuables including his car keys were taken and his BMV was stolen.

The car was later found on Kaae Road near a red Honda that had been seen in Wailuku Heights the day an 83-year-old man was beaten in a burglary, police said. The victim was found lying unresponsive on the kitchen floor the afternoon of Dec. 19, police said.
