1 dies, 2 hurt after being found in ocean

Three people were pulled from the ocean in separate incidents Monday, with one person drowning and two others taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

At 2:30 p.m., Paia firefighters responded to a call of a missing fisherman in Pilale Bay off Kulike Road, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Paul Haake.

A 28-year-old local man, who was with two other friends, had been missing since noon.

The Air One helicopter and a lifeguard aboard a personal watercraft from Baldwin Beach assisted in the search.

At about 3 p.m., the man was found facedown in the water about 100 yards offshore by the chopper. He was picked up and brought to shore, where medics pronounced him dead.

The tide was high, and the surf was reported at 10 feet at about the time the man was missing.

At noon, Napili fire crews responded to a near-drowning in Kapalua Bay. Once on the scene, crew members gave first aid to a 60-year-old Japanese woman, who had been pulled from the water by onlookers.

The woman had been snorkeling in the bay with her husband and son.

Medics transported her to the hospital in critical condition.

At about 2:50 p.m., Lahaina firefighters responded to a call of an unconscious female pulled from the water at the beachfront near Kaanapali Villas.

Crew members arrived at the beach to find cardiopulmonary resuscitation in progress on a 55-year-old woman from Canada. Medics arrived shortly after, and the patient was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
