Flash flood watch in effect
Updated: 9:30 p.m. Wednesday
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a flash flood watch for Maui through 6 a.m. Thursday.
An area of heavy moisture is moving across Oahu and Maui County in the trade wind flow while an upper level trough overhead destabilizes the atmosphere. This will maintain conditions conducive for heavy rains and flash flooding, the National Weather Service said Wednesday afternoon.
At 4 p.m., radar showed heavy showers falling over Upcountry, between Kula and Ulupalakua. Rainfall rates were in excess of 1 inch per hour, the National Weather Service said.
By 7:30 p.m., radar showed that heavy rain was easing along the windward slopes of the West Maui Mountains and the windward areas of East Maui. The National Weather Service cautioned that runoff remains high from previous rainfall and that there may be ponding on the highways.
