Junior lifeguard applicants sought
Maui County is accepting applications for its 2013 Junior Lifeguard Program.
Junior lifeguard pool training is open to youths from 12 to 17, but for the ocean training segment, participants must be at least 13 years old.
Until April 30, applications will be available at all county lifeguard towers and swimming pools, Parks and Recreation facilities in Hana and on Molokai, and at the Lanai Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing.
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must be able to pass a 300-meter swim test, nonstop, within 11 minutes. A parent or legal guardian needs to be present during the swim test.
Completed applications should be sent to Ocean Safety Training Capt. Cary Kayama (cary.kayama@maui county.gov), faxed to the county Aquatics Division Office at 270-6141 or dropped off at the division office at the War Memorial Gym in Wailuku.
Training will be offered during weeklong sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at various locations on Maui, Molokai and Lanai between June 10 and July 19.
Training consists of familiarizing students with water safety skills, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, surf-and-rescue techniques, ocean swimming, paddle boarding and lifesaving skills.
Although the program is free, there is a suggested $15 donation to the Hawaiian Lifeguard AssociationMaui Chapter.
