Shima acting head of schools complex

Alvin Shima, who has been principal at several Maui schools, is the current Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui complex acting superintendent, according to the state Department of Education.

He replaced Leila Hayashida, who left her post as principal at Waihee School last fall to serve temporarily as complex area superintendent, according to Donalyn Dela Cruz, state Department of Education spokeswoman.

Hayashida has taken a new job, as a director in the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support, she said.

Shima, a school renewal specialist for the Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui complex, became acting superintendent March 11.

With the DOE for nearly 38 years, Shima was principal at Kihei Elementary for 11 years from 2000-11, interim principal at Iao Intermediate, vice principal at Wailuku Elementary from 1995-2000 and vice principal at Makawao Elementary and Lahainaluna High schools in 1994-95.

The position has been vacant since longtime complex area superintendent Bruce Anderson resigned to become Maui High School’s principal in the fall.

“The department continues to search for a long-term candidate with the right fit for this leadership position,” said Dela Cruz.
