As of 3 p.m. Monday, Maui police had issued 215 distracted driving citations, all for cellphone use, throughout the county in April as part of Distracted Driver Awareness Month, said Lt. Ricky Uedoi, commander of the police Traffic Section. “It’s a rampant problem,” he said. It’s common to see drivers stopping at red lights and looking at their cellphones while waiting in traffic, he added.
