Attempted murder charge in attack
A 20-year-old man has been arrested on an attempted murder charge in connection with an attack on a driver who was hit in the head with a rock and had his rear windows shot out near Piihana Farms in Wailuku over the weekend.
Erath Kaihewalu, who gave no local address, was being held in lieu of $110,000 bail Thursday at the Wailuku Police Station. He was charged with second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
The attack occurred at about 9 a.m. Saturday when a 52-year-old Kahului man drove a woman friend home to Piihana housing, parking along the fence at North Market Street and Piihana Road. When two men got out of a black truck, approached and began yelling at him, the man drove off down Piihana Road into the Piihana Farms area to get away, police said. He was chased by the men in the truck, who blocked in his vehicle, police said.
The woman got out of the victim’s car and got into the truck before the two men got out of the truck, police said.
Kaihewalu was identified as the man who grabbed a large rock and smashed the driver’s side window of the car, then hit the victim in the head with the rock, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. The other man from the truck used a shotgun to shoot the rear windows of the car, police said.
The victim accelerated around the truck to flee and went home, where a relative took him to the hospital to be treated for a 6-inch laceration to the left side of his forehead, police said. An investigation is continuing.
