Bicyclist collides with vehicle, dies

A 33-year-old man was killed after the bicycle he was riding collided with a truck in Lahaina on Saturday afternoon, according to a news release from the Maui Police Department.

Gary-Dean Kahunanui of Lahaina was traveling west on Kapunakea Street at 12:14 p.m. Saturday when his blue-and-white bicycle entered the Honoapiilani Highway intersection on a red light, according to police. Kahunanui’s bicycle was struck by a commercial vehicle Freightliner truck traveling north on the highway in the left lane.

The truck was operated by a 52-year-old Kahului man, who was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Kahunanui was not wearing a helmet, police said. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash.

Police were continuing to investigate.

This is Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality for 2013, compared to 10 at the same time last year.
