Community lei-making event set for Friday
A community effort to make lei to place on the graves at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on the front lawn of the county building.
The event is sponsored by Kaunoa Senior Services and the Office of the Mayor.
The goal is to make 2,500 lei, which will be placed on veterans’ graves at the cemetery by Girl Scouts.
There will be live music by Maui-born vocalist Neal Yamamura, and Kathy Collins will emcee the event.
Flower donations are requested. Flowers and greenery may be dropped off between 9 and 10 a.m. on the day of the event at the South High Street parking lot fronting the county building.
Items needed include lei needles and crochet thread, green ti leaves (cut and frozen), crown flowers, orchids, bozu flowers, plumeria (buds and partially open) and other sturdy flowers.
Pre-sewn lei also are welcome. Lei should be 20 to 24 inches long before tying.
There will be a free shuttle to the county building from the War Memorial Football Stadium parking lot every half hour beginning at 8:30 a.m.
