Deadline extended for Kuhua Street comments

The deadline for comment on the proposed Kuhua Street extension project in Lahaina has been extended to May 31.

A draft environmental assessment for the project was published in the “Environmental Notice of the Office of Environmental Quality Control” on March 23 with a written comment deadline of April 23.

Following a community meeting April 15, the county Department of Public Works voluntarily extended the comment period, a news release from the county said.

The proposed road alignment will be east of and roughly parallel to Honoapiilani Highway and will span about 2 miles from Keawe Street to the Honoapiilani Highway/Front Street intersection at the southern end.

The proposed roadway alignment follows a former cane haul road, across the Kahoma Stream Flood Control Channel to Kuhua Street. The Kuhua Street roadway alignment involves primarily lands owned by the County of Maui and Pioneer Mill.

Written comments may be filed with the Department of Public Works, 200 S. High St., Wailuku 96793, attention: David Goode, director; or Munekiyo & Hiraga Inc., 305 S. High St., Suite 104LW, Wailuku 96793, attention: Colleen Suyama, senior associate.

The draft environmental assessment is available at the Kahului and Lahaina public libraries or online at oeqc.doh.hawaii.gov/Shared%20Documents/EA_and_EIS_Online_Library/Maui/2010s/2013-03-23-MA-5B-DEA-Kuhua-Street-Extension.pdf.
